What is a Chain Drive?
The basic or common type of opener for commercial and residential properties would be the chain drive. It can be found connected to the hockey stick bar which is attached to the door.
The chain drive is operated by a trolley that is pushed or pulled up and down the track.
This type of opener is commonly used because of its lower price. As with everything though, you get what you pay for. These are generally more noisy openers. This is not a good option if you have a room above your garage.

What is a Jackshaft?
Jackshaft is comparable to the other styles of openers, but it’s different in that it’s installed on the side of the door instead of above it. This is important because newer homes are built with taller garages. Having higher ceilings will make it harder to connect the opener to a power source.
Whether you have high, vertical or standard lift doors, the jackshaft is compatible. It should not however be used with a low headroom door. This type of opener is only usable with a system that uses torsion springs.
Is a Belt Drive the Same as a Chain Drive?
While the belt drive is very similar to the chain drive, it does have its differences. For example, it uses a belt instead to push or pull the door. It is also a much more quiet system, perfect for garages attached to your home.
On the other hand, these are a bit more expensive than the chain drive. May feel though that this is a good trade off and worth the price for the quieter sound.

What Does The Capacitor Do?
Inside of the opener there is an electric component called the capacitor. This mechanism is designed to pull or push the door. When pushed, the receiver will receive the signal, building power within the capacitor. This is what makes it work.
Receivers and Transmitters
Inside of the opener you will find the receiver. This communicates with the transmitter, also known as the wall mount or remote. When the transmitter is activated, a signal is sent to the receiver to operate the motor inside of the opener.
Some remote transmitters may have two or three buttons, depending on the number of doors you have. Each button on the remote is programmed to the proper door according to the pattern of the dip switch. There can also be buttons on your wall that will make different openers work.
The part of the opener that links your remote and opener together is known as the dip switch. These two must communicate, and can only do so when the tiny switches inside the parts match up. Without the switches matching, the two parts will not work properly together.
